Kuan Yin embodies the compassion of all the Mahayana Buddhas.  Kuan Yin's name literally means, "Hears the cries of the world," and is known in Japan as Kanzeon, or as Kannon. Numerous temples throughout East Asia are dedicated to Kuan Yin, and wherever Chinese communities have spread throughout the world, you are likely to find a temple there.
